Men are overcoming the sexist stigma of plastic surgery and are opting for procedures to fix issues that have bothered them for years! Last year, for the first time ever, 40 percent of the breast reductions performed were on men. They want to enhance their exterior appearance to more closely match interior ideals. And, just as for women, plastic surgery for men may be medically beneficial, mentally vital, or simply satisfying.
Fort Lauderdale board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Wigoda has been doing plastic surgery for men and women alike for over 17 years and has found that plastic surgery for men has been steadily increasing. In 2015, these were the top five plastic surgery procedures men had requested:
Dad bods may have been the “it” thing for a while, but trends fade and so can the fat. Let’s face it, sometimes those last few pounds can be stubborn and the older you get the harder you need to work to maintain your fit figure. Liposuction allows patients to sculpt problem areas and help them to show off their progress. The plastic surgery procedure itself has been around for more than 30 years and becomes more and more common every year, lately even more so in men! Liposuction can be used to slim hips and thighs and flanks, flatten the abdomen, eliminate a double chin, and more but liposuction for men is most popular for the belly, love handle, and chest areas.
2. Rhinoplasty/Nose Surgery
In films, it may not be as frequent as rhinoplasty for women but don’t let that fool you, nose jobs for men are almost as common in the real world. Even Hollywood’s finest actors have considered and even gotten nose surgery to help them fix a feature that they weren’t 100 percent confident in. Household names like Zac Efron, Ryan Gosling, and Ashton Kutcher have had minor work done to enhance the face’s most prominent feature. Maybe there was an old injury that didn’t heal right or something minor like a bump, flared nostrils or asymmetry that you wish you could change. Nose surgery, also known as Rhinoplasty, doesn’t have to be extreme to make a big difference, and minor alterations like adjusting how the nasal tip droops, plunges or is enlarged in general can have a huge impact on the overall look of the nose.
3. Eyelid Surgery
A simple yet dramatic way for men to instantly improve their looks and become more confident is eyelid surgery. Many times people judge their appearance as a whole and don’t realize that a key feature may be the culprit, or that something so simple as your eyes can make such a huge impact on how people see you. If you have lower-eyelid puffiness, dark circles or drooping upper lids, others may assume that you are fatigued, angry, or unhappy. However, when your eyes are bright and alert, you appear energized, well-rested, and in control. Eyelid surgery can remove excess or loose skin, reduce puffiness and fine wrinkles in the upper and lower eyelids and, in some cases dark circles.
4. Gynecomastia aka Male Breast Reduction
Much like those last few pounds of stubborn fat, gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs,” can be present through no fault of your own and may be nearly impossible to tone no matter how hard you work out. An estimated 40 to 60% of men have extra fat and or glandular tissue in one or both breasts and there is no known cause in the majority of cases, but that doesn’t make men feel any less self-conscious about having it. Male breast reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes the excess tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases your plastic surgeon can remove excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. The results of the Gynecomastia are significant and permanent!
5. Facelifts and Neck Lifts
Forty is the new 30 and who says 60 can’t be sexy? Some of the most visible signs of aging first appear on the face and sometimes the way we look on the outside does not reflect the energy and youthfulness we feel on the inside. If you’d like to look as good as you feel, aface or neck lift can remove years and give patients a firmer, fresher look. Not ready for the full plastic surgery procedure yet? You’re never too young to start. Facelifts may seem to turn back the hands of time but for best results in the future, it’s important to do regular maintenance before it’s necessary. The Vampire Facelift is a non-surgical option that is similar to injecting fillers (think Botox) but puts your own blood to work!
There are multiple options for all of these popular male plastic surgery procedures but for best results, the key to a successful surgery is to research and trust the judgment and experience of the plastic surgeon doing the procedure.
