Health Study: Increased Quality of Life for Breast Augmentation Patients

The results are in; breast augmentation makes women happy. A study published in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ magazine Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that women experienced substantial improvements in several key areas related to their quality of life. Approximately 41 women participated in the Breast-Q survey that asked questions about six relevant areas:

  • Overall satisfaction with outcome
  • Satisfaction with breasts
  • Physical well-being
  • Psychosocial
  • Sexual
  • Satisfaction with level of care received

The women were polled six months before and after their surgeries. Researchers found in three of the six areas – sexual – scoring increased 30 or more points (on a scale of 0 to 100) post-surgery for about 80% of the women.

The dramatic change may be related to the surge in self-esteem and self-confidence many women feel after having their breasts increased or reshaped. Though the reasons for getting breast implants vary, the most commonly cited motivation behind a woman’s quest for new breasts is because they are unhappy with the size, shape, or look of the set they were born with. This dejection can bleed into other areas of the women’s life, particularly her perceived attractiveness and acceptance by others.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have been encouraging those in the industry to monitor patient satisfaction in addition to safety. The Breast-Q survey is the first such tool that seems to be able to capture how a patient thinks and feels after she has the procedure. Having this information is the first step towards developing benchmarks for patient satisfaction that may improve the overall quality of care women receive.

In the meantime, women who want to ensure they get the best care should have their breast enhancement done by a knowledgeable and experienced plastic surgeon.
